Betty J. Hughes' Obituary
Betty Jean (nee Porter) Hughes, 85, of Arcadia, Fla., passed away Tuesday Nov. 17, 2015, at The Palms of Punta Gorda after a lenghty battle with Alzheimer's disease.
She was born April 5, 1930, in Flemingsburg, KY., and moved to Arcadia 42 years ago from Xrnia, Ohio.
Betty dedicated her entire life to the care of others, raising eight children, working in nursing homes, and working 20 years at the former G. Pierce Wood Memorial Hospital in Arcadia. She was happiest when surrounded by her family-nothing made her happier than time with her children.
Betty is survived by her daughters, Bobbie (Tony) Melendez of Arcadia, Debbie (Clark) Vilardo of Arcadia, Brenda (Mike) Sheppard of Clewiston, Fla., Mary Jane Hinson of Hebron, Ind.; adopted daughter, Billie Peterson; sons, Kevin (Kathy) Hughes of Xenia, Glen (Lyn) Hughes; daughter-in-law, Pam Hughes; 26 grandchildren, 27 great-grandchildren and numerous nephews and nieces. She was preceded in death by her husband of 59 years, Robert Hughes; parents, Newt and Marie Porter; son, Earl Hughes; brothers, Clemmie Porter, Earl Porter, Paul Porter and Scottie Porter; sisters, Margie Heck, Carolyn Grubbs and Ruth Ann Dodge.
Our Mother, our Nanny is now at peace, reunited with our father standing in the presence of her Heavenly Father. She will live in our hearts forever leaving behind so many cherished memories.
